Project
Description: The Mobile River
Terminal was built in 1952. This $800,000 project to restore
wharf structural capacity incorporated the city of Mobile's
desire to increase the dredge line to handle deep-draft vessels.
The 1,200-foot concrete beam and deck wharf, supported by steel "H" pilings,
includes a 110-ton gantry crane, and impressed current cathodic
protection. The terminal required concrete encasement repairs
and PVC corrosion wraps.

Special
Issues and Needs:
Underwater
construction management had to take place in low
visibility water. The dredge line needed to be increased
to 47 feet MLW to handle larger vessels.
Services
provided:
• Reviewed existing drawings.
• Conducted comprehensive underwater inspection and assessment (Level
I, II and III).
• Took vertical alignment measurements.
• Conducted ultrasonic thickness gauge testing.
• Produced concrete coring.
• Tested dissolved oxygen levels under PVC wraps.
• Conducted static and dynamic analysis of structure and gantry crane
support.
• Conducted berthing analysis.
• Produced preliminary and final designs to restore wharf structural
capacity.
• Devised detailed engineering and budgetary cost estimates.
• Produced full video and still documentation in low visibility.
Project Summary:
The project was completed in March of 2002 on schedule, to budget, and
to the client's satisfaction.
